They're the hardest. In subsequent expansions, they're easier. Definitely meant to be done in a small group. Keep in mind, regular hero challenges only give you 1 point, HOT hero challenges give you 10. As others have said, HoT are the hardest ones, but there are plenty of communes or easier ones in addition.
